mobile ordering

By now you’ve heard both Heather and myself tell you all about the My Disney Experience (MDE) app. I live and die by MDE on vacation! All of our plans are neatly laid out. Dining reservations, FP+ times… maps with character wait times, attraction wait times… all our PhotoPass pictures. Seriously, MDE really does have everything! And now, you can use the mobile ordering function at select restaurants to order before showing up and standing in line! Score!

This actually rolled out a while ago but I never got around to trying it myself. Mobile ordering is incredibly easy to use – simply open the MDE app, either tap “dining” in the top scrolling menu and find your menu or tap your character icon at the bottom of the screen and tap “order food”, then build your order.

Mobile ordering is not available at all locations. Currently, your options are:

For our inaugural mobile ordering attempt, we decided to go with Columbia Harbour House, because Michael and I both love their fish & chips. Unfortunately, we tried to order at about 10:52am and CHH doesn’t open until 11:00am – which meant we couldn’t place a mobile order yet. Sadly, it took me three attempts to figure out why it wasn’t working! No worries, we decided to head over to Pirates of the Caribbean since MDE said there was only a 5 minute wait (it was raining and the park was pretty empty).

When we got off Pirates it was 11:02am so I decided to try mobile ordering again. Again, it didn’t work, and I was about to get cranky, but I took a deep breath, completely shut down the app, and reloaded it… and BAM! The menu pulled up. As I mentioned, we both love the fish & chips so there was no question what we were going to get. We also got crisps as the plates come with a second side, and I added a Diet Coke to Michael’s order. There wasn’t an option in the app to add a cup of water for me. I reviewed our order and went to the payment screen…

Which leads me to the one complaint I have about mobile ordering: credit card only! Seriously. The only way to pay while mobile ordering is with credit card… no dining plan. No gift cards. Also, no discount if you’re at a location where you could use a DVC or AP discount. I have full faith that eventually Disney will roll out options to pay with dining plan credits or with a Disney gift card, but as for right now… nope.

So, Michael dutifully handed over his credit card and I plugged in the information. He told me to save the information in case we decided to do some more mobile ordering later, so I did. Then…. we headed over to CHH. Right before we actually walked inside I clicked the “we are here, prepare the food” option. Michael went off to gather up tartar sauce and napkins and find a table, and I went up to the mobile ordering pickup line to wait.

When they said that our food was ready I asked for a cup of water. I mentioned that there wasn’t an option in the app and the Cast Members agreed and said it was because at any time anyone could go into any quick serve restaurant and ask for a cup of ice water for free. I guess that makes sense. So, I gathered up our stuff and headed off to find Michael… who forgot the malt vinegar (because he despises it). After a few minutes of picture taking, I dug in.

Delicious! I even wrote an ode to the crisps (which I am only calling crisps because I’ve been calling the french fries “chips”… you know… because of the whole “fish & chips” thing…). I’m not a poet though, so it’s pretty lousy. Trust me. But the meal was delicious!

I got such a giggle though, because we had been sitting and eating for a solid 15 minutes before I got a pop up notification on my phone that our order was ready for pickup. Well… duh… it was ready and we were already eating!

If only there was the option to pay for your meals with a Disney gift card, I would probably use mobile ordering every time we planned to eat at a participating location. It really was easy and super convenient. Practically flawless… but only practically. That whole saving the credit card information to use later? Yeah… the card might have been saved to my account, but when we went to use mobile ordering at Flame Tree Barbecue the next day, I had to enter his information in again. That was pretty frustrating too. (update: but now that I’m back home and writing this post, I went to check something in the mobile ordering, and Michael’s card showed up… finally! So it must have been a glitch that kept it from appearing when we went to Flame Tree)
